AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Music City Youth Orchestra

Primarily intended for high school students, younger students are also welcome to participate provided they are able to meet the audition requirements. All students who have not yet graduated from high school and who play violin, viola, cello, or bass are encouraged to audition. Most of our currently enrolled musicians have been playing their instruments for 5–10 years.

Students who audition will be asked to play:

  • Two short (1–2 minutes), contrasting, unaccompanied solos. These may be contrasting in tempo, articulation, musical style, etc. and should demonstrate your best musicianship and technical skill level.
  • Scales: your choice of keys for each:
    • One - 3 octave major scale (1 octave for bass players)
    • One - 3 octave minor scale (1 octave for bass players)
    • One –legato – 6 per bow
    • One – spiccato – 1, 2, or 3 strokes per pitch
  • Sight read a selection from the orchestra's repertoire. Participating students need to submit an audition application and complete an audition. Release and dues forms will be given to each participating student upon acceptance into the orchestra. Dues are $250 for the 2010–2011 season and there is also a one-time $12 folder fee.
